When the NASA Space Shuttle is on a Mission all touchtone commands are
disabled other than touchtone function one (#1) which is used to access the
Space Shuttle audio. When you touchtone one, You command up one hour
of Shuttle Audio which is received vie Satellite and microwaved on 2.4Ghz,
14 Air Miles to the "QST MACHINE".

What is the QST Machine?

  • The Las Vegas QST Machine's main function is to provide information about local amateur radio, by the use of two meter handheld transceiver and touchtone control. Serves local and visiting ham radio operators with information of interest to Amateur Radio Operators.
What are some of the Command Functions?
  • Touchtone 1 for retransmission of NOAA weather. Times out in 3 minutes.

  • Touchtone 2 for SKYWARN information.

  • Touchtone 3 for club history and board of directors.

  • Touchtone 4 Special ham radio announcements, such as volunteers needed for non profit radio communications.

  • Touchtone 5 QST Machine main menu.

  • Touchtone 6 QST Machine technical information.

  • Touchtone 7 Listen to the amateur radio newsline program.

  • Touchtone 8 A list of open VHF repeaters.

  • Touchtone 9 A list of open 6m/APRS/UHF/ATV repeaters.

Any plans to expand the QST machine?
  • Yes, it is the hope to coordinate a nationwide QST simplex frequency. All QST machines would be on the same frequency, with the same access touchtones from city to city. The Las Vegas QST machine is being developed as the standard to follow in the establishment of all other QST machines.
