RADIO ACTIVE Newsletter of the Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club March 2003 Serving Las Vegas since April 1961 The President's Corner Charlie Kunz, AA5QJ The Speedway Fundraising event is over and we are anxiously awaiting the results of our efforts. Hearty thanks to the 53 LVRAC members and family and the 13 Elks members who made this event a success. An Appreciation Dinner is in the works for these volunteers - details will be sent out in the next few weeks. Primary among our goals as a club is providing communications to public service events. We also have committed LVRAC to support ARES/RACES in their role of providing emergency communications in time of disaster. In the past we have used various means to set up a command post for public service events: tents, borrowed vans, pickups and trailers, etc. We have been provided an opportunity to have our own Communications Trailer to use as a command post for events and emergencies. This 21-foot travel trailer was previously owned by a radio club in Utah and last used at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2000. It comes with 2 meter, 440, commercial, and CB radios, a computer, a TV/VCR unit, and a UHF repeater. It could be deployed as is, in support of several upcoming public service events, although it really is a blank canvas ready for the artisans of our ham radio community to create a masterpiece. It is possible, that in the appropriate location, this trailer could be the club station we have often discussed having for the benefit of all members. I displayed pictures of the trailer at the Feb 15th ARES/RACES meeting and it was enthusiastically received, and its purchase recommended. 18 members signed up to help refurbish and maintain the unit. ARES/RACES is not incorporated nor a non-profit organization and has no income. LVRAC is incorporated, is a non-profit organization and has income and the ability to accept tax-free donations of cash and equipment in support of this project. The public service events we support are LVRAC functions. ARES/RACES would have the trailer available for emergencies and exercises. 33 of the 53 LVRAC members who supported the club by working the Speedway concessions are also ARES/RACES members, so in reality we are both organizations. I have presented this project to the LVRAC Board of Directors and will present this to you, the members, for your approval at the next LVRAC meeting on Mar 11th. I think you will be as enthusiastic about this project as the Board and I are, and look forward to your affirmative vote. A Heart Felt Thanks I wish to thank you all for your support of the Speedway fundraiser for the Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club and this year's partner organization, the Elks Club of Henderson. It's hard work, but I could see that each of you were experiencing the personal satisfaction of hard work paying off, that what you were doing was contributing to the overall success of our operation. In spite of the rain on Friday and Saturday, and the mostly event-free and thus short race on Sunday, we sold over $85,000 of beer and snacks at our 2 stands. That's less than in the past 2 years, but certainly a worthy accomplishment considering the forces pitted against us and the increased competition for those race fan dollars. Bill will have the definitive numbers as soon as all the computation is complete. Because of your enthusiasm and friendly attitudes we earned $512.40 in tips at our 2 stands. That money will go toward the Speedway Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Details on that will be sent in a few weeks. Again thank you for all your hard work, for working together as a team, for staying, if you could, to help clean up and get the stands checked out in record time, in a word: for everything... Charlie Kunz AA5QJ President, Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Frank Kelley, KB7PVU EPIPHANY "A sudden intuitive realization or perception of reality." What's that got to do with the club newsletter you ask. Well I'll tell you. Every month the call goes out for articles and information to fill the pages of this newsletter. And yet every month it's the same few members that submit anything. For example: The Club President sent in three articles covering a total of 1,104 words made up of 6,666 characters, 43 paragraphs and 156 lines. The club Secretary even submits an article that has 718 word or 3820 characters, 34 paragraphs and 125 lines. Tim Hunt, gave us an article with 157 words and even Jamie Gorr, yes, you read correctly, Jamie Gorr provided a 384 word article. Now consider this; this news letter contains 4,361 words of which only 376 cover overhead. Subtract that and the word total from the articles received and you come to the epiphany that support to the club newsletter is a tad lacking. What's it all mean??? Your editor needs HELP! She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to stash the quarters in her room. "I'll be right back and we'll go to eat," she told her husband and carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator. As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were black. One of them was tall...very tall...an intimidating figure. The woman froze. Her first thought was: These two are going to rob me. Her next thought was: Don't be a bigot; they look like perfectly nice gentlemen. But racial stereotypes are powerful and fear immobilized her. She stood and stared at the two men. She felt anxious, flustered and ashamed. She hoped they didn't read her mind but Gosh; they had to know what she was thinking!!! Her hesitation about joining them in the elevator was all too obvious now. Her face was flushed. She couldn't just stand there, so with a mighty effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the elevator. Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The elevator didn't move. Panic consumed her. My God, she thought, I'm trapped and about to be robbed! Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore. Then one of the men said, "Hit the floor." Instinct told her to do what they told her. The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and dove to the elevator floor. A shower of coins rained down on her. Take my money and spare me, she prayed. More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, "Ma'am, if you'll just tell us what floor you're going to, we'll push the button." The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh. It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing. The woman thought: My God, what a spectacle I've made of myself. She was too humiliated to speak. She wanted to blurt out an apology, but words failed her. How do you apologize to two perfectly respectable gentlemen for behaving as though they were going to rob you? She didn't know what to say. The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters and refilled her bucket. When the elevator arrived at her floor they then insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor. At her door they bid her a good evening. As she slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with laughter as they walked back to the elevator. The woman brushed herself off. She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband. The next morning flowers were delivered to her room - a dozen roses. Attached to EACH rose was a crisp one hundred dollar bill. The card said: "Thanks for the best laugh we've had in years." It was signed; Eddie Murphy, Michael Jordan Amateur Radio Exams Tim Hunt, WA6TNW 5 April given in room A107 n the CCSN - Henderson campus. The exams start promply at 12 noon (Pacific time). Andy Oppel, N6AJO Appointed to Be Pacific Division Vice Director ARRL Bulletin 21 ARLB021 From ARRL Headquarters Newington CT February 22, 2003 To all radio amateurs ARRL President Jim Haynie, W5JBP, appointed East Bay Section Manager Andy Oppel, N6AJO, Pacific Division Vice Director on February 20. The appointment fills the vacancy in the Pacific Division created when former Vice Director Bob Vallio, W6RGG, acceded to Pacific Division Director upon the death of Director Jim Maxwell, W6CF, on February 6. Haynie made the appointment in accordance with the League's By-Laws. Oppel's appointment is for the balance of Vallio's term, which expires January 1, 2005. Oppel took over the East Bay Section Manager's position from Vallio in January 2000. Prior to that, he was an Assistant SM in East Bay for eight years under Vallio's section leadership. Oppel said their long-term working relationship would definitely be an asset. A ham since 1977 and a General-class licensee, Oppel, 50, said his interest in emergency communications work is what helped to get him into ham radio. Oppel works as a database designer and administrator for a financial institution. ARRL Field and Educational Services Manager Rosalie White, K1STO, has appointed Dennis Franklin, K6DF, of Fremont to take over the reins from Oppel as East Bay SM. Race for the Cure! This is an "All-Points-Bulletin"!! Howard Mark (K3HM) and I met with the Operations organizers for the Susan G. Komen, Breast Cancer Foundation, Race for the Cure, on February 20, 2003. Annually, this event has become one of the largest charity events held in Las Vegas. Last year the event saw 8,400 people in the 5-K run and another 4,400 in the 1-mile walk! So Howard and I our estimating that it will require about 24 hams to fully cover the event... As of this date, we have 16 ham who have volunteered... If you are able to assist us in helping out on Saturday, morning, May 3, 2003, please send me an email.. This is another one of our opportunities to really make a difference in the local community.. Local Hams are getting a very good reputation for helping assisting charitable activities in town! All that will be required on your part is a portable (hand-held) or mobile (in your vehicle) radio set-up, capable of 2-meters and 70-meters. The event is held in the Downtown area of the city. Due to the large number of people participating in this year's event, organizers have asked the members of the Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club to assist them by providing communications support for the event. Those interested in helping out should expect to be at the event around 6 AM and be released around noon. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Tom Petrakis (KE4ULL) @ tpetrakis@lvcm.com. Membership Information Members-Only web page-- James R.
